Keitaro Gentoga je uvek privlačio duhove zbog svog snažnog spiritualnog prisustva. Zbog traumatičnog susreta sa jednim, desna ruka mu je prokleta, što ga prisiljava da uvek nosi rukavicu. Sada brucoš na fakultetu, Keitaro pokušava da živi što normalnijim životom. Uz ohrabrenje drugarice iz detinjstva, Eiko Hozuki, postaje privatni tutor. Videvši da Keitaro privlači duhove, ona ga natera da joj pomogne u sakupljanju drugih zlih duhova koji će joj pomoći u budućoj bitci. Iako je njena misija opasan, Keitaro oklevajući odluči da joj se pridruži, ali, svaki novi susret s duhovima ga tera na preispitivanje te odluke.
